Guntur Dry Red Chilli
Teja (S17) · S4 Sannam · 334 · Whole & Powder
Origin & Market Context

The world's benchmark for pungency. Sourced from the origin.

Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh is India's largest chilli trading market and one of the most recognised chilli origins in global spice trade. The varieties grown here. Teja (S17) and S4 Sannam in particular, are among the most widely exported dry red chillies in the world. Teja accounts for roughly 50% of Guntur's crop area because of its pest resistance, heat consistency, and yield. S4 Sannam is the preferred variety for masala and powder manufacturers who need deep red colour over maximum heat.

Guntur APMC dry chilli prices have ranged Rs. 7,500 to Rs. 23,000 per quintal in recent months, reflecting seasonal variation, crop size, and variety premium. Teja commands a premium over S4 for pungency. Contact us for current FOB indications, mandi prices move with each week's auction.

Variety Profiles

Three varieties. Different heat, colour, and end-use.

Teja
S17 variety
Hottest

Thin-skinned, deep red, high oleoresin content. The dominant export variety for global food manufacturers and oleoresin producers who need consistent capsaicin levels. Grown across Guntur, Khammam, and Prakasam districts. High natural pest resistance reduces the need for chemical treatment, relevant for regulated export markets.

SHU: 65,000 – 90,000  |  ASTA: 60–80
S4 Sannam
S4 / Samba variety
Most Traded

Thick-skinned, deep red. Lower heat than Teja but stronger red colour payoff in end products. ASTA colour value 50–60. Preferred by masala manufacturers, chilli powder blenders, and buyers in China and Mexico who prioritise colour over maximum pungency. Originally from Tamil Nadu, now widely grown in AP and Telangana.

SHU: 18,000 – 35,000  |  ASTA: 50–60
334
S4-type hybrid
Powder Grade

Dark red, semi-wrinkled, slightly longer than S4. Popular for chilli powder production because of its colour consistency and low seed count. Grown in Kurnool, Telangana, and AP. When ground, delivers thick, dark red powder with moderate heat. Frequently used in masala blends alongside Teja.

SHU: 25,000 – 40,000  |  ASTA: 55–70

USA · Germany · Japan. Nutraceutical & Supplement
Health and wellness buyers

These buyers need documented curcumin percentages, pesticide residue reports, and increasingly, heavy metal analysis. They're not buying on price alone. A supplier who can provide consistent lab documentation across shipments and maintain traceability to district of origin has a real advantage here. Double polished and organic grades are the primary interest.

Spice export glossary, plain definitions.

Industry terms used on this page, explained briefly. Useful if you're evaluating Indian chilli or turmeric for the first time.

Teja (S17)
A dry red chilli variety widely grown around Guntur, Khammam, and Prakasam in Andhra Pradesh. Thin-skinned, deep red, high oleoresin. Scoville Heat Units 65,000 to 90,000, capsaicin 0.8% to 1.2%. The dominant export variety for global oleoresin and capsaicin processing.
S4 Sannam
A thick-skinned, deep red chilli variety. ASTA colour value 50 to 60, SHU 18,000 to 35,000. Preferred by masala and powder manufacturers who prioritise red colour payoff over heat. Originally from Tamil Nadu, now widely grown in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
334 chilli
A S4-type hybrid chilli variety. Dark red, semi-wrinkled, slightly longer than S4 Sannam. ASTA 55 to 70. Low seed count makes it popular for chilli powder production and masala blends.
ASTA colour value
A measurement of red colour intensity in dried chilli or chilli powder, established by the American Spice Trade Association. Higher ASTA values mean deeper red appearance in the end product. Standard export grades run 50 to 100 depending on variety and form.
Scoville Heat Units (SHU)
A measurement of pungency / heat in chilli, named after Wilbur Scoville. Pavana Global's Teja runs 65,000 to 90,000 SHU; S4 Sannam runs 18,000 to 35,000; 334 runs 25,000 to 40,000.
Capsaicin content
The percentage of capsaicin (the active heat compound) in chilli. The primary specification for oleoresin and extract buyers. Teja typically 0.8% to 1.2%; S4 Sannam typically 0.2% to 0.4%.
Curcumin content
The percentage of curcumin (the active anti-inflammatory compound) in turmeric. The primary quality indicator for nutraceutical and food-processing buyers. Pavana Global's AP turmeric runs 2.5% to 5% depending on grade. Test method: HPLC or UV spectrophotometry.
Single polished turmeric
Standard export grade. Turmeric fingers polished once after drying. Bright yellow-orange. Curcumin 2.5% to 3.5%. Most common format for spice powder manufacturers and culinary buyers in UAE, Bangladesh, Malaysia.
Double polished turmeric
Premium grade. Turmeric fingers polished twice for uniform bright yellow appearance and tighter foreign-matter spec. Curcumin 3% to 4.5%. Preferred by retail buyers, food processors, and nutraceutical operators in Germany, USA, UAE, Japan.
EU MRL
European Union Maximum Residue Level standards for pesticide residue on imported food products. EU MRL testing via accredited labs is mandatory for European buyers of chilli and turmeric and increasingly requested by UK, Japan, and USA buyers.
IPM (Integrated Pest Management)
A farming approach that minimises chemical pesticide use. IPM-grown chilli is documented with pesticide-residue test reports, making it compliant for regulated export markets (EU, UK, USA, UAE, Japan).
